# The library

> A Space's library: every image and video in it, generated and uploaded, to file in folders, search, filter, rate, give keywords, rename, tidy into Trash and use. The same library opens over a Canvas, docked or as a window.

A Space fills the whole window beside the sidebar. Across the top are its name and its two views, and on the right the library's search, **Share** and the Space's **⋯** menu. The views are: **Work**, its Canvases, which it opens on, and **Assets**, its **library**: every image and video in the Space, whether you made it with the Assistant or uploaded it. The address remembers when you're on Assets.

The Space's Composer stays at the bottom in both views (see [The Space's Composer](#the-spaces-composer)).

## Folders

Folders keep a library tidy. They hold images and videos, and other folders, as deep as you like. Each image or video is in one folder, or loose in the library itself. Keywords work across folders.

Folders come first, above the images and videos. Each folder shows up to four of its newest pictures, its name and how many items are in it.

- **Open a folder** by double-clicking it. Above the grid, the path shows where you are, **Library › Autumn campaign › Selects**: click any part of it to go back up.
- **New** › **New folder** (at the top right) makes a folder where you are. A folder's **⋯** menu (or right-click it) can also make one inside it.
- **Rename**, **Move to…** and **Move to Trash** are in the same menu. A folder can't go inside itself or one of its own folders.
- **Move images and videos** by dragging them onto a folder, or onto part of the path above the grid to move them up. Everything you've chosen goes together. You can also right-click and choose **Move to folder…**.
- **Drag a folder** onto another folder, or onto the path, to move it with everything in it.

Moving an image or video into a folder changes only where it's filed: it's still the same image or video, with all its versions, everywhere it's used.

What you upload, or make with the Space's Composer, while you're in a folder goes into that folder. What you make on a Canvas goes into the library itself.

Folders belong to a Space: your Drafts don't have them. The library you open over a Canvas in a Space shows the same folders.

### In the sidebar

Under the Space you're in, the sidebar shows **Assets** with the Space's folders beneath it. Click the arrow beside a folder to open or close it: each opens on its own, and this browser remembers which are open, for each Space.

- **Click a folder** (or **Assets**) to open the library there. The folder you're in is highlighted, and the folders above it open so you can see it.
- The address includes the folder, so you can share a link to it, and the browser's back and forward buttons go through the folders you've opened. The sidebar, the path above the grid and the folder cards always agree.
- **Drag images and videos** from the library onto a folder in the sidebar, at any depth, to move them there. Everything you've chosen goes together. A folder that can take them lights up as you drag over it, and a closed folder opens if you hold the drag over it for a moment, so you can reach the folders inside.
- **Drag a folder** onto another folder in the sidebar, or onto **Assets**, to move it with everything in it.
- A folder's **⋯** menu (or right-click it) can make a folder inside it, rename it, move it, or move it to Trash, as in the library.

A folder doesn't light up for something it can't take: a folder can't go inside itself or one of its own folders, and images and videos only move between folders of their own Space. If you can only view the Space, you can open its folders but not change them. On a phone, tap a folder to open it.

## Browsing

The newest is first. When you're in a folder you see what's in it. A search or filter finds things in the folder you're in and every folder inside it.

Across the top:

- **Search** finds words in names. A generated image or video is named after its prompt until you rename it, so you can search for what you asked for.
- **Filter** narrows what's shown with rules. Choose a field, then a condition and a value: **Name** contains (or doesn't contain) some words; **Kind** is an image or a video; **Source** is generated or uploaded; **Rating** is at least, at most or exactly some stars, or has none; **Keywords** has all, any or none of the ones you tick; **Date added** is before, after or between days; **Duration**, **File size**, **Width** and **Height** are at least or at most an amount. **Add filter** adds another rule, **×** takes one away and **Clear all** takes them all away. At the bottom, choose **Match all filters** (everything shown meets every rule) or **Match any filter** (it meets at least one). The button says what you're filtering by, **Filtered by Rating**.
- **Sort** orders it: newest or oldest first, by name, by rating, by file size or by duration.
- **Appearance** changes how cards look: their **Card size** (S, M or L), their **Card shape** (landscape, square or portrait), whether pictures **Fit** inside their card or **Fill** it, whether cards show their name and details (**Show card info**), whether names take one or two lines (**Titles**), and **Flatten folders**, which shows everything in the folder you're in and every folder inside it, without the folders.
- **Trash** shows what's in the library's Trash (see [Trash](#trash)).

The library remembers your filters (except keywords), sort and appearance in this browser, separately for a Space's page and a Canvas's library. It doesn't remember your search, keyword filters or Trash.

Scroll as far as you like: more loads as you go, and a Space with thousands of items stays quick.

Each card shows the picture in a thin frame, its name, and whether it's an image (with its size) or a video (with its length). A rated card shows its rating in the corner, **4 ★**. Move the pointer across a video to scrub through it: the card shows the frame at that point, with a playhead and the time. A new video shows **Preparing preview…** until its preview is ready.

## Choosing

- Click a card to choose it.
- **Ctrl**-click (**⌘**-click on a Mac) adds or removes a card.
- **Shift**-click chooses everything between.
- **Drag** across an empty part of the library to draw a box: everything it touches is chosen. Hold **Shift** to add to what you'd chosen, or **Ctrl** (**⌘**) to switch what it touches. Near the top or bottom edge, the library scrolls.
- **Esc** clears your choice.

### With the keyboard

Click the library (or Tab to it), then:

| Key | Does |
| --- | --- |
| Arrow keys | Move through the grid, row by row as it's laid out |
| **Shift** + arrow keys | Choose everything from where you started |
| **Home**, **End** | Go to the first or last |
| **Ctrl+A** (**⌘A**) | Choose everything that matches your search and filters |
| **Enter** | Open it |
| **Space** | Look at it larger; **Space** or **Esc** again to close |
| **Delete** or **Backspace** | Move what you've chosen to Trash (in Trash, delete it for good, after you confirm) |
| **Esc** | Clear your choice |
| **Ctrl+F** (**⌘F**) | Search the library |

Whatever you've chosen shows in the details panel along the right edge, which is always there, so nothing in the grid moves. The button to the left of **New** puts the panel away so the grid fills the width, and brings it back; it's remembered in this browser. The grid and the panel each scroll on their own. It shows the image or video larger, then its details: its type, size or length, whether it was generated or uploaded, when it was added, its file size, its rating and its keywords. Choose another card to see that one instead; close it (×), click an empty part of the library or press **Esc** to clear it. A generated image or video also shows how it was made (the prompt, the model and the cost). Choose a video to play it there.

- **Open** (or double-click) opens an image in its editor (see [Editing an image](/create/images/#editing-an-image)), and a video in the video editor (see [Editing a video](/create/videos/#editing-a-video)).
- **Rating**: point at the rating and it opens into five stars. Choose one to rate it (or everything you've chosen) 1 to 5 stars. Choose the same rating again to take it away. A card's own rating works the same way, under the pointer. Ratings belong to the Space, so everyone in it sees the same ones.
- **Keywords**: under **Keywords**, each keyword is a badge; click its **×** to remove it. Click the keywords area to search the Space's keywords: tick one to add it to everything you've chosen, untick it to take it away, or type a new one and press **Enter**. With several chosen, a keyword only some of them have is shown dashed.
- **Rename** (the pencil beside the name) renames it. Press **Enter** to keep the new name or **Esc** to cancel. Renaming changes only its name: it's still the same image or video, with all its versions, wherever it's used.
- **Move to Trash** takes it out of the library (see [Trash](#trash)).
- **Download** saves the original file, for everything you've chosen.
- **Use as reference** gives what you've chosen to the Space's Composer as references.
- **New** (at the top right, or **New ›** in the right-click menu) starts something new: **New image** and **New video** put the Space's Composer in Image or Video, ready for your prompt; **New folder** makes a folder where you are; **Upload asset** adds images and MP4 videos from your computer, into the folder you're in.

Right-click a card for the same things. A card you right-click that isn't chosen is chosen first. Anyone who can edit the Space can upload, rename, rate, give keywords and move to Trash. Anyone who can view it can browse and download.

While an image or video is being made, it's already in the library, marked **Making…**, and it fills in when it's ready.

### On a phone

On a phone the library takes the whole screen. **Filter**, **Sort**, **Appearance** and **Trash** are icons beside the search. Tap to choose, and double-tap to open the details in a sheet from the bottom, with **Edit** to open an image in the image editor.

## Trash

**Move to Trash** (or **Delete**) takes images and videos out of the library. Moving a folder to Trash asks you first, and says how many folders and items go with it. **Undo** in the message that appears puts them straight back. Anything a Canvas already shows stays on that Canvas and keeps working.

Choose **Trash** at the top to see what's in this library's Trash, with how many days are left. Everything you can restore, from every library and Workspace, is also in **Trash** in the sidebar, where **Restore** puts it back in its library. Search, Filter and Sort work there too.

- **Restore** puts it back in the library as it was. A folder in Trash is one entry: restoring it brings back everything that went with it, in the same folders. If the folder it was in has gone, it comes back at the top of the library; if another folder there now has its name, it gets a number, **Selects (2)**.
- **Delete for good** deletes it permanently, after you confirm. Only people who manage the Space can do this.

Something still in use stays in Trash and you're told why: it's on a Canvas (including one in Trash), a generation was made from it, another image's layers use it, or it's still being made. Deleting an edited image also deletes the layers its editor made for it, unless something else uses them.

Trash keeps things for 30 days. After that they're deleted for good, unless something still uses them.

## The Space's Composer

The Composer belongs to the Space, so you don't need a Canvas to make something. It's at the bottom of the Space in Work and in Assets, and what you write in it stays as you switch between them. It's the Space's own conversation with the Assistant, separate from each Canvas's (see [Talking with the Assistant](/create/assistant/)).

- In **Ask**, talk about the Space and what you want to make.
- In **Image** or **Video**, what you make goes straight into the Space's library, into the folder you're in. It isn't placed on any Canvas: add it to one from the library when you want it there.
- To work from something in the library, choose it and **Use as reference**, or drag its card onto the Composer: it's added to your prompt.

## On a Canvas

The same library opens over a Canvas, showing the Space's images and videos (a Draft's library is your Drafts). To open it, use either:

- **Browse assets…** in the menu when you right-click the Canvas background;
- **Add images or videos** (+) in the toolbar, then **Browse assets…** (**Upload from computer…** is there too).

It opens as a window. Use the dock button to dock it on the left instead: the Canvas makes room for it, as it does for the Assistant on the right. The expand button opens it as a window again. Your search and choice carry over between the two.

- **Add to Canvas** places what you've chosen in the middle of your view.
- **Drag** a card from the docked library onto the Canvas to place it where you drop it.
- **Use as reference** gives what you've chosen to the Composer as references, without placing them on the Canvas (see [Working from images](/create/assistant/#working-from-images)). Dragging a card onto the Composer does the same; dragged onto the Canvas, it's placed there.

Each placement is one step of the Canvas's undo (**Ctrl+Z**).

Right-click works here too, and **Add to Canvas** is in its menu.

Not available yet: folders in the sidebar, seeing which Canvases use an image, audio and 3D.
