Moving around a Canvas
Panning and zooming with a trackpad, a mouse, the keyboard or a touch screen, and where a Canvas opens.
| To | Trackpad | Mouse | Keyboard | Touch screen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pan | Scroll with two fingers | Scroll (Shift + scroll for sideways), or drag with the middle button | Hold Space and drag | Drag empty space with one finger, or drag with two fingers |
| Zoom around the pointer | Pinch | Ctrl + scroll (⌘ + scroll on a Mac) | Pinch | |
| Zoom in or out | Ctrl/⌘ + plus or minus | |||
| Zoom to 100% | Shift + 0, or Ctrl/⌘ + 0 | |||
| Zoom to fit | Shift + 1 |
Pinching and Ctrl + scroll keep whatever is under the pointer under it. Zooming with the keyboard, the zoom menu or a typed level holds what you’ve selected in place (the middle of several), or the middle of the view when nothing is selected or the selection is out of view. Zoom goes from 5% to 3200%. The zoom level shows in the bottom-right corner (on a narrow screen, such as a phone, just above the Assistant’s prompt): type a level into it (for example 150) and press Enter, or open its menu for zoom in, zoom out, zoom to fit, 50%, 100% and 200%. While a Canvas is empty, zoom to fit returns to its centre at 100%.
On a touch screen (an iPad, a tablet or a phone), one finger dragged across empty space moves the view with it, and two fingers move it too: drag them to pan, and pinch to zoom around the point between them. Putting a second finger down stops whatever the first one started, so a pinch never moves or selects anything. An Apple Pencil works like a mouse: a drag across empty space draws a selection box rather than panning.
Menus show keyboard shortcuts beside their items only where there’s a keyboard to use them, not on a touch screen.
Scrolling and pinching over a Canvas never scroll or zoom the page. Keys work whenever a Canvas is open, except while you are typing in a field such as the title.
A Canvas opens where you last left it, including after a reload. Your view is your own and is kept with your account. A Canvas you have never moved opens at its centre, at 100%.
